Early 2002 we introduced a 'ban' on provision of files such as .zip, .exe, .mp3 (to name a few), unfortunately it was an inconvenience to many users. Not only that, people would abuse it
even further by renaming the file extension. We then changed it to no files above 3mb could be served off the webserver, including people using PHP to stream files larger than 3mb.
In early 2003, it changed once again. Files up to 10mb can be served off the webserver at the cost of speed, all files over 1mb in size are capped to 15k/sec. Harsh? No, it would however be harsh
if we did not provide several file servers in addition.

Firstly, we use high-quality bandwidth for our webserver in an attempt to ensure fast loading times. The downside of that is serving
large files over HTTP at high speeds becomes costly, which is why we provide the edgefiles service.
Secondly, HTTP daemons do 10x more work, using 10x more ram. If 200 people are downloading
a file, it cramps the server's resources, slowing the 100's of hits per second. You will find it is very rare for a popular series of websites to provide files off the same URL as the site itself.
One more reason is as a webhost we are forced to handle and overlook the activities of our hosted sites to ensure no illegal activity is taking place. There have been numerous attempts to
serve `warez` off our servers, limiting the ability to serve files over HTTP makes it much more difficult to do so.
